Chapter Eleven
Maggie was drenched.
No matter which way she turned or how much she squirmed, she couldn't escape the water. It was clinging to her skin, soaking through her clothes, rolling down her back, plastering each hair to her head.
It was everywhere.
She tilted her head to the side and considered her predicament. She really didn't like being wet. At least, she'd never liked it as a cat. But all in all, it wasn't nearly as bad as she'd expected. Especially with Nicholas there, a little-boy grin on his face, his free hand held out in front of him to catch raindrops.
Still, she was awfully wet. Might as well try to get a little of the water away from her skin. She stopped on the path and stood still, tensing all her muscles, concentrating on getting the water off. Then she shook all over. Or tried to. Her human body didn't seem to be designed for the hearty kind of shake that would send the water flying. All this shake did was make her jiggle all over.
But if the way Nicholas was staring at her was any indication, jiggling might not be a bad thing. He ran his hands up on either side of his face, then slicked back his wet hair. "Too wet?" he asked, his voice hoarse. "Do you want to go back inside?"
"No." To prove it, she tilted her head back and closed her eyes, letting the droplets land on her forehead, her eyelids, her lips. The drops streamed down her face, and she stuck her tongue out, catching the liquid.
She opened her eyes and saw him watching her, desire pooling in his golden brown eyes. A hint of a smile touched his lips.
"Come on," he said, before he turned away and continued on the path.
As Maggie followed close behind, she wondered if there wasn't something magical in the backyard that night, hiding in the rain that danced between them or in the lights that shimmered like fairies in the dark. Night magic. And she needed all the magic she could get if she was going to win Nicholas.
"Maggie?"
She looked up to see Nicholas, his hand held out to her.
"Second thoughts?" he asked.
Never. She shook her head and started to scramble toward him, then stopped. Running pell-mell into his arms was hardly graceful and feminine.
Keeping her head high and her back straight, she moved through the drizzle toward Nicholas, closer and closer, until she could feel the warmth of his body.
"Hold me, Nicholas," she whispered, curling her arms around his neck. "I want you to dance with me," she whispered.
With a soft moan that turned her insides to jelly, he pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her waist. Every movement of his body sent warmth coursing through her, making her entire body hum.
They swayed together, the air between their bodies charged, almost crackling with passion. He groaned, sliding his hand over her lower back, the gentle pressure enticing and exciting, his touch as eloquent as a thousand words of love.
